A cryptic letter from mercurial musical genius Ludwig van Beethoven (Gary Oldman) that turned up shortly after his death started one of history's most compelling romantic mysteries. Who, among the many women Beethoven seduced, was his Immortal Beloved? The mystery unfolds as Beethoven's trusted attaché, Anton Schindler (Jeroen Krabbé), conducts a search that leads him first to a former noblewoman (Valeria Golino), and then to a beautiful Hungarian countess (Isabella Rossellini). The third woman woven into the mystery is Beethoven's sister-in-law, Johanna (Johanna Ter Steege), to whom the composer was attracted before she eloped with his brother. Immortal Beloved is a story of rises and falls, loves and losses, outrages and small kindnesses from a man of extraordinary (and sometimes secret) passions.
