The mystery unfolds as Beethoven's trusted attaché, Anton Schindler (Jeroen Krabbé), conducts a search that leads him first to a former noblewoman (Valeria Golino), and then to a beautiful Hungarian countess (Isabella Rossellini). The third woman woven into the mystery is Beethoven's sister-in-law, Johanna (Johanna Ter Steege), to whom the composer was attracted before she eloped with his brother.
