It s 1957, and J.C. "Cully" Cullen (Matt Dillon), an innocent young man with a talent for winning at craps, decides it's time to move to the big time-Chicago. As Cully makes his way around the the big town, he meets Lorry Dane (Diane Lane) and her husband Cole (Tommy Lee Jones), owners of a strip club where Lorry works as the headline attraction while Cole runs the town's toughest crap game out of the backroom. Lorry hates her husband and lets Cully know it; soon the trusting young man is in love with her. Cully also becomes involved with an attractive single parent (Suzy Amis) and a slick gambler (Tom Skerritt). As these lives begin to intermingle, Cully is forced to make choices, both personal and professional, while taking a hard look at the gambling life, which stops at nothing-even murder.
